Many Christians find themselves asking this question as the Lord begins to stir their heart towards service with Him.
It’s always interesting to see how God calls people to serve with Him.
For example, when Jesus called the disciples to follow Him, he never asked them what type of degree or religious training they had. More than anything, he cared about their heart and their eagerness to serve Him!
We see this repeatedly throughout scripture.
In Mark 1:16-20 we read, “One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing their net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, ‘Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!’ And they left their nets at once and followed Him.”
Another example can be found in Luke 5:11 when Jesus calls Simon to follow him, “’Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!’ And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.”
Then again in Luke 5:27-28 scripture says, “Later, as Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collectors booth. ‘Follow me and be my disciple,’ Jesus said to him. So Levi got up, left everything, and followed Him.”
Will you give up everything to follow Jesus?
There is something deeply beautiful and drawing about the disciples’ response to Jesus’ call. He didn’t provide them with additional information or ask them to undergo training. In all three instances, Jesus told them, “Don’t be afraid.” In response, the disciples left everything to following Him.
How many times have you heard or thought, “You know…I think I would like to serve with Jesus, but He might take me someplace I don’t want to go or make me do something that I don’t know how to do”?
If you feel called to ministry, “Don’t be afraid!”
Jesus simply says, “Follow me.”
It appears there is a difference in leaving your nets behind and leaving everything behind. Peter asked
Jesus, “We’ve given up everything to follow you. What will we get?”
Jesus’ answer includes you.
Jesus replied, “And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for My sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life.”
The Harvest is Ripe
God is the creator of everything. When we pause to look at the variety of creative ministries He has
raised up to get the Good News proclaimed, it helps us understand more of the gifting the Spirit
distributes to Jesus’ followers to accomplish the task of the Great Commission at the end Matthew’s
Gospel account.
The need for people to serve with Jesus in ministry is overwhelming! The harvest is ripe, the workers are
few. That statement has never been more true than today! We have a sense of urgency as we see these last days unfolding.
The adventure of serving Jesus is oftentimes uncertain, challenging, and somewhat frustrating. As you go along this journey, He will continue to mold and sharpen you for even more service.
In a time in our culture when we seek a quick turnaround and reward for serving, this calling is not always appealing…but the rewards are eternal! Someday, we will be standing by the “river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb. It flowed down the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal nations. No longer will there be a curse upon anything” (Revelation 22:1-3).
In Conclusion
Is God stirring your spirit to serve with Him? Don’t hesitate! Don’t be afraid! The rewards are eternal!
You don’t need a bible degree to serve as a missionary. More than anything, God cares about your heart and your eagerness to serve Him!
If we are truly following Jesus, we can trust He is right in front of us clearing the path, so we need not to be afraid!
Seek His face, listen to His voice, and remain open to the work He wants to do in and through you.
