God planted a unique seed in the fertile soil of a child’s heart. The child’s name was Birne Wiley.Founder Birne’s father was a pastor who believed in hospitality especially to fellow Christian workers. As a young boy and teenager, Birne was allowed to stay up late talking to missionaries who frequently visited the Wileys’ home. Many missionaries would confide frustrations that their time on the field and their mission’s dollars were being eaten up by necessary projects that did not fall within their training or calling. These missionaries had been called and equipped to preach and teach the gospel. Instead they found themselves trying to build churches clinics or camps, produce Bible lessons and other printed literature, repair Jeeps, and other activities they were not prepared to handle.
God used these conversations to plant the seed that grew into the vision of Missionary TECH Team, a service organization, designed to free missionaries to do the work for which God had called and gifted them.
In 1968, after much prayer, counsel and research, Birne, with his friend Dave Carnahan, founded Missionary TECH Team, a mission organization that would partner with like-minded Christian workers and missions to address some of their technical needs with expert help at low cost. By early February 1969 they had completed fieldwork in Indiana and located in Longview, Texas to formally incorporate. Their office was originally in the home of Birne’s parents, Rev. and Mrs. Harry Wiley. Later, TECH was moved to a house on the R. G. LeTourneau Corporation grounds then to its present location in Northeast Longview.
At first TECH’s ministry centered on engineering and construction services, helping develop needed facilities for missions. As the mission grew and other critical needs became known, TECH began offering assistance in the areas of visual communications (Graphic Services, added in the 1970’s), mechanical services (Vehicle Leasing, added in the 1980’s), volunteer coordination, special ministries, and other consultative services. This then expanded into computer software development (Software Services, added in 2002) and fund development training. Today, over 47 years after it’s beginning, we continue to help transform lives for Christ by serving hundreds of different missions, missionaries and Christian organizations around the world every year. We offer services through five interlinked areas: Facilities Planning, Graphics, Software, Vehicle Leasing, and Ministry Development.
What started as a seed in a child’s heart has grown and reproduced itself many times over increasing the fruitfulness of ministries around the world and transforming lives for Christ.
